Research shows have well planned independent reading
times daily pays off with student ach. One study found students who read an
hour a day scored 98th % on standardized tests, those who read about 5 mins
daily scored 50th %, and those who did not read outside of school at all,
scored 2nd %. The question is if we believe that, then why are we not all
setting aside time for this proven learning time? For students to succeed they
need time to read and read a lot, choose what they read and talk about it,
receive instruction to learn how readers read, and receive support from the
teacher. Great article!
I also think that offering choice will help with this. Students are more likely to sit and read something they want to read and less likely to sit and read something they are told to read. I witnessed this in my classroom several years ago when I started offering more choice. Students would be so excited about IR time! They would beg for more time! :)
